What are nakshatras?
The 27 lunar sectors, padas and their traditional context.
27 divisions of the ecliptic
Many Jyotish traditions divide the zodiac into 27 nakshatras, each spanning 13°20′ of longitude. These are equal sectors of a chosen sidereal frame, not physically equal distances to stars.
The Moon’s nakshatra comes from its sidereal longitude at birth. Nakshatras of other planets are also considered in some traditions, depending on the method.
Four padas per nakshatra
Each nakshatra contains four padas of 3°20′, giving 27 × 4 = 108 segments. Close to a boundary, the recorded birth time can influence the assigned pada.
Nakshatra names carry symbols and mythological associations. Study them in historical and textual context rather than reducing a person to a personality label.
