Tarot The Fool: card meaning
The card of beginnings, the open road and the freedom to try something unfamiliar.
Card symbolism
In the classic image the traveller approaches an edge with a small bundle: not empty-handed, but carrying only what matters. The forward gaze suggests openness; the nearby dog recalls instinct and alertness. As card zero, the Fool describes a journey before its outcome or role has been fixed.
Upright meaning
Upright, the Fool favors curiosity, a fresh experience and a first practical step. For work it may describe a pilot project or a new skill; in relationships, meeting someone without repeating an old script. An open attitude need not mean a blind leap: test an idea at a manageable scale.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the Fool asks whether spontaneity has become carelessness or whether fear has prevented any beginning. Nearby cards can clarify whether the missing ingredient is information, a boundary or the courage to start. Name the real risk and the smallest sensible experiment.
In a Tarot spread
In a past position, the Fool may describe a recent change of direction; as advice, it can suggest trying a new approach. Beside the Emperor, freedom needs structure; beside the Moon, uncertainty deserves a closer look before moving.
